Basically, these fonts were developed by IBM computers for printing purposes. They launched two printers in 1982. The first one was a 240 DPI 3800-3 Laserzerographic Printer and the second one was a 600 DPI 4250 electro erosion laminate typesetter.

IBM named these fonts "Sonoran Sans Serif" and was officially announced in early 1984. The font sizes were 14 ranging from 6-36 and four style categories (Roman medium, Roman Bold, Italic Medium, and Italic Bold).

In 1989, PostScript Type 1 was created by Monotype. But the official version of PostScript was announced in 1991 not earlier. The company named "Birmy" marketed the font in Type 1 compatible form.

In 1990, Robin Nicholas, Patricia Saunders, and Steve Matteson created a true type outline version of Arial fonts, and that version was licensed to Microsoft of course.

In 1992, Microsoft chose Arial fonts to be used in Windows 3.1 and others and then they announced to replace Arial with Helvetica Font.
